Cachao: Uno Más, produced by DOC Film Institute, will premiere on American Masters on September 20.A glimpse into the maestro’s life and music, “CACHAO: Uno Mas” pays tribute to one of the greatest Afro-Cuban musicians of all time, Israel López ‘Cachao’. This 83-minute documentary, produced by the DOC Film Institute at San Francisco State, features a live concert in San Francisco and interviews with musical collaborators Andy Garcia, John Santos, Ray Santos and Orestes Vilató who help trace Cachao’s musical journey from his early days in Cuba to worldwide fame and recognition.
This film will be very different from the festival version which we finished in 2008. With rare archival footage from Cuba taking us back to Cachao’s roots, the new film offers more insight into Cachao’s personal life as we follow the journey of a musical genius. The film also shows interviews with Arturo Sandoval and Gloria and Emilio Estefan who help us understand Cachao’s unparalleled contribution to Afro-Cuban music. Anay Tarnekar (M.F.A., Cinema, ’06) is co-producer, co-editor and interim director of the Documentary Film Institute. Former Cinema Professor and Chair Stephen Ujlaki is one of the producers.
